Several names have been mentioned as potential candidates to replace James Comey as the new FBI Director, and we are all impatient to see who would be Trump’s final pick. On Thursday, the President said he is “very close” to making that decision.
“I’m very close to choosing an FBI director,” Trump told television news anchors during a private lunch at the White House.
When he was asked who is his top pick, President Trump gave a surprising answer.
He said that his top choice right now for the next Director of the FBI is Joe Lieberman.
That’s right, Democrat Joe Lieberman is currently Trump’s front-runner for the job position. This is the same guy who ran as Al Gore’s Vice President back in 2000.
Trump added that he wants to name a replacement for James Comey, whom he abruptly fired as the agency’s head last week, as soon as possible.
The move sparked a massive controversy in Washington, considering Comey’s federal probe into Russian election interference and the Trump campaign’s possible ties to Moscow. All that is now in the hands of former FBI Director Robert Mueller, who was named as special counsel Wednesday, reports The Hill.
Sources inform that Trump will make the final announcement for his pick before leaving Friday for a nine-day foreign trip, which would be his first overseas tour as president.
Lieberman would be an unusual pick for the job, since past FBI chiefs have either worked at the bureau or served as a federal judge or prosecutor.
The former Democrat-turned-Independent senator currently works at the law firm Kasowitz Benson Torres in New York – the same firm as Trump’s attorney Marc Kasowitz.
Trump interviewed three other candidates for the post – former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating (R), former FBI official Richard McFeely and acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who was said to be Trump’s top pick for the job, took himself out of the running this week.
